Evangelion - What is Eva?

1st Baron - Eva Unit 01 Evangelion Unit Information from The Gospel of the New Century.

Go Here For Evangelion Unit 00,01,02,03 Information.

An Evangelion a Modeled version of a Baron from Hell, One of them had "a single horn and great gnashing teeth" - Eva-01, the second had "a blank, featureless face with a single glaring eye" - Eva-00, the third was "the color of blood, with four eyes and two mouths" - Eva-02, and the last "black as night, with unnaturally long arms and wicked teeth" Eva-03. Is this a sense of dark irony on the part of Gendo Ikari and SEELE; pitting the Barons of Hell against a host of Angels? A True Fact.

In the symbolism of Neon Genesis Evangelion, the EVAs themselves play a number of fascinating roles. To Gendo Ikari, they are his primary tools -- except for EVA-01, that is. For the Children, they are their jobs, their protection, and their sources of self worth all at once. They are the only thing that is really theirs, and yet they do not really belong to them at all.
For Shinji Ikari, Rei Ayanami, and Asuka Langley Soryu, piloting EVA gives them an identity. It is a distinction that sets them apart from all other people, but for each one, it also becomes their only sense of value. It's not unlike a form of emotional addiction in that sense, as extreme as that may sound. The EVAs become their reason for living -- and yet, the EVAs themselves are only a means to an end as far as Ikari and NERV are concerned.

However, the true nature of the EVA series is what really makes them interesting. They cannot be called "mecha" by any definition of the term; not only are they not "robots", they're not even mechanical! Each EVA is almost entirely organic, the outer armor being just that -- armor plating designed to protect (and also restrain) the body beneath.

In episode 20, Ritsuko Akagi describes the EVAs as being "Something created by Man, in Man's own image". This is my favorite description of them, because it sums up their essence very directly and bluntly. For all their bizarre forms, it can be argued that each Angel is still a thing of beauty, in one way or another, being of Divine creation. The EVAs, however, are ugly and bestial in both appearance and behavior. They are brutally effective, to be certain, but the horror conveyed by their very being cannot be denied either. Created by human scientists from a combination of human genetic material and DNA from the Second Angel, Adam, the EVAs are -- and are consistently portrayed as -- a perversion, the bastard children of science and human ambition.
