EVA-01: Yui Ikari. This is hinted very broadly
throughout the series, both in the EVA's own behavior (acting independently
for the specific purpose of defending Shinji, her son, on three separate occasions),
and in the characters' dialogue. Also, in episode 20, Ritsuko alludes to
an "accident" ten years prior when a test pilot was physically absorbed into
the EVA, and was never retrieved. This was how Yui Ikari "died", but continued
to exist inside the hulking form of EVA-01. This is probably why Shinji was
able to achieve such a high synch ratio with the EVA in such a short time,
and it's also likely that Gendo had considered this when he selected his
son to be the Third Child. (Look at his face when the lights fall, in episode
1... brrrr.) Yui's existence inside EVA-01 is also very graphically illustrated
in episode 24, where we see Gendo talking to the EVA and calling it
by his wife's name. In any other series, such a thing would have looked almost
comical, but in Evangelion that scene was truly chilling.
EVA-02: Kyoko Zeppelin Soryu. This is inferred
in the conversation overheard between Asuka's father and stepmother during
her mother's funeral, in the flashback scene in episode 22. They refer to
the cause of her insanity as being "the contact experiment", which evidently
resulted in a part of Mrs. Soryu's psyche being absorbed into the EVA. Also
of note is the fact that Asuka's synch ratio with EVA-02 began to drop when
she became preoccupied with thoughts of her mother.
EVA-00: Naoko Akagi. This is much less
obvious, but if you put the pieces together it fits. On both occasions when
EVA-00 went berserk, it lashed out at either Gendo, or Rei, or Ritsuko --
or all three. After the second incident, Ritsuko was convinced that it had
been trying to attack her. This is enough to convince me that Akagi's
mind was somehow transplanted into the EVA after her suicide... Imagine suddenly
waking up and discovering that you'd become a part of your own experiment,
with your lover and your daughter quite literally manipulating you like a
puppet. Does the EVA's behavior begin to make a bit more sense...?
EVA-03: If we were to continue the trend,
it would probably be Toji Suzuhara's mother, but that's pure speculation with
no proof to speak of. However, Misato states in episode 19 that all
of Shinji's classmates were candidates to be EVA pilots, and from the look
of things, none of them had living mothers. Shinji didn't, Asuka didn't,
Rei (obviously) didn't, Toji didn't, Kensuke didn't, Hikari didn't... a rather
disturbing coincidence, no?
