This is a difficult question, and has more than one possible correct answer. There is no direct evidence anywhere in the series to indicate that they are "aliens" of any sort, at least in the extraterrestrial sense; in fact, I am inclined that they are intended to be precisely what their namesake implies: messengers of God.
There are seventeen Angels in all, and each one has a distinctive form and purpose. However, it is very important and interesting to note that each and every Angel forces NERV (and therefore Mankind) to do something that they had previously thought was not possible. What that something is varies with each Angel, but in each and every case it's obvious that they are more than simply an "attacking enemy". Also, despite their seemingly unlimited powers, they never attack with sufficient strength to overwhelm NERV completely. They are the most complex and multi-layered metaphors used in Evangelion, but like everything else, they are still primarily used as metaphors, rather than as a story unto their own.
Ultimately, the Angels seem to represent life's trials. Each person faces a varying number of difficulties, challenges and tribulations in their lifetime. It may range from something as simple and direct as a difficult task, possibly related to one's work, to something as severe as the destruction of a relationship or the death of a loved one. The point is that these things are personal trials, painful events that all people face -- but eventually, if one looks back on their life, they will find that these unpleasant things have made them a stronger person. THE A.T. FEILD
Abbreviation of "ABSOLUTE TERROR FIELD". A physical barrier of absolute field put out by the Angels and EVA's. It boasts enormous defensive power, and it is able to greatly reduce the power of all attacking weapons. The ability of EVA to neutralize the A.T.Field of the Angels is one major reason why EVA was considered as the only weapon against the Angels. However, the same A.T.Field does not exist only in the Angels or EVA's. Human also possesses this field. With this A.T.Field, human is able to keep seperate from each other, and to stay in seperate physical forms. Nagisa Kaworu explained A.T.Field as "a barrier of heart that everybody has".
