Status: Ninth angel
Name: Matariel
First seen: Episode 11
Attack: Acid, which is produced from the eye in the centre of the angel's body
Death: Destroyed by Units-00, -01 and -02 in a joint operation
This angel approached NERV after a large-scale power blackout, which left them in trouble when the Eva pilots could not reach NERV. The angel's target seemed to be NERV itself; it positioned itself above HQ, and began dripping acid down into it. The children finally found their way inside, and were launched manually in their Evas. After a shaky start to the attack, Asuka formulated a plan - with all three Evas working together, they managed to position themselves in the shaft below the Angel, and shoot with their rifle straight up through its body, destroying it.
According to mythology, Matariel was the angel of rain... acid rain mayhaps? Anywho, it "rained" acid into Tokyo-3 ^^
Status: Tenth angel
Name: Sahaquiel
First seen: Episode 12
Attack: Uses its own body to bomb the earth
Death: Caught and destroyed by Units-00, -01 and -02 in a joint operation
Seemingly intent on destroying both NERV headquaryters and the Eva series in one go, this angel remained out of reach, and began dropping parts of its body to earth as bombs, adjusting its aim each time to hit closer to its target - eventually once its aim was correct, it would drop itself! A plan was devised by Misato, with little hope of success, in which the Evas would be required to catch the angel before it hit the ground and exploded. All three were launched, and Shinji somehow managed to catch the angel, before receiving support from the two other pilots to kill it.
According to mythology, Sahaquiel was the angel of sky - since it appeared and spent most of its time in the sky.
Status: Eleventh angel
Name: Ireul
First seen: Episode 13
Attack: Takes over the MAGI, and uses NERV's own defences against it
Death: Destroyed by Ritsuko, through the use of a computer "virus"
This angel's aim seemed to be to destroy NERV itself, by using the Magi against it. Appearing originally as corrosion in an armor plate, it was disregarded until it suddenly began a rapid spread, and could not be controlled. It "evolved" to avoid all attempts to destroy it, and eventually became a computerised organism and hacked into the Magi. Using the first of the Magi, it initiated NERV's self-destruct sequence to begin after complete takeover of the other two. It was halted temporarily, and Ritsuko devised a plan to kill it. In a split-second battle against time, the angel and Ritsuko raced each other for control of the remaining Magi, Ritsuko winning by only one second, and thereby reversed the angel's effects. Control of HQ was restored, and Gendou denied to the committee that this angel ever existed, saying it was merely a computer malfunction.
According to mythology, Ireul was the angel of fear - shown by the fear tactics it used by taking NERV's own defences away from it.
Status: Twelfth angel
Name: Leliel
First seen: Episode 16
Attack: Swallowing opponents with its shadow-like body
Death: Destroyed by the bezerk Unit-01
This angel's identity was mistaken at first, with all three launched Evas targeting the form in the sky - this was soon proved to be harmless, however, when Shinji shot at it. This spurred it to reveal its true form, a shadow on the ground which swallowed Unit-01 and the screaming Shinji. A plan was then deivsed to blow up the shadow with N2 mines, but this meant that Shinji would die as well... With less than a minute remaining until the operation's commencement, the shadow ruptured and broke into pieces, destroyed. The orb in the sky split apart, dripping blood... and revealing the form of the bezerk Unit-01!
According to mythology, Leliel was the angel of night... since the angel itself was one great shadow, this fits pretty well ^^
