Status: Fifth angel
Name: Ramiel
First seen: Episode 5
Attack: A powerful particle-beam cannon, and a drill
Death: Destroyed by Units-01 and -00, in a joint sniper attack
This angel was extremely powerful; built like a fortress, and with an incredibly strong particle-beam weapon. It was not designed for close combat, as it didn't let anything come within range of it. Its target seemed to be the geofront itself, which it attacked directly by drilling its way through NERV's armor plates. It injured Shinji pretty badly when he first went out in his Eva to fight it, and so a plan was devised, to take it down with a sniper-shot from out of range. The first shot made by Unit-01 was intercepted by the angel's own beam, but Rei in her Eva blocked the attack, while Shinji recharged the gun and fired a second shot, destroying the angel.
According to mythology, Ramiel was the angel of thunder - this could be linked to the particle-beam cannon used by Ramiel throughout the two episodes.

Name: Gaghiel
First seen: Episode 8
Attack: Simply uses its incredible bulk and teeth
Death: Destroyed by Unit-02 and the Japanese Navy
An unexpected attack by this angel caught Shinji and the new pilot Asuka unaware, in the middle of the sea on their way to Japan. It attacked simply by ramming anything that got in its way, and soon dragged Unit-02 into the water, with Asuka and Shinji inside. A plan for defeating the angel was formed, but some difficulties were encountered, as the Eva was not properly equipped for underwater fighting. However, with the combined concentration of both pilots in Unit-02, they managed to push the angel's mouth open. This caused it to swallow two Navy warships, which then shot at it from inside, and caused it to explode.
According to mythology, Gaghiel was the angel of fishes - obviously, since Gaghiel looks a lot like a fish itself.

Name: Israfel
First seen: Episode 9
Attack: Hand-to-hand combat, and an energy beam
Death: Destroyed by Units -01 and -02 in a synchronised attack
This angel appeared shortly after Asuka's arrival. Being her first battle in Japan, she decided to run ahead and destroy it herself... which she seemingly did, slicing it right down the middle with her knife. However the angel regenerated as two separate beings, both of which easily defeated the two Evas. During the time it took the angels to properly repair themselves, a synchronised attack was planned and practiced between Asuka and Shinji. Launching out to attack, they used music to time their movements, and together they managed to recombine the angel into one entity, and then kill it.
According to mythology, Israfel was the angel of music - hence the music used by Asuka and Shinji to defeat it.
Status: Eighth angel
Name: Sandalphon
First seen: Episode 10
Attack: Sharp teeth
Death: Destroyed by Unit-02, using Unit-01's progressive knife
When this angel was originally detected, it was still in embryo form, floating in lava inside a volcano. In this seemingly harmless state, a special command A-17 was issued to capture it. Unit-02 was fitted with Type-D equipment, to protect it from the lava's intense heat, and while Unit-01 remained above the volcano as back up, it decended downward to retrieve the angel. All went well, and Asuka was able to secure it in the cage she had been given, until it awoke, grew at an alarming rate, and attacked. It had the ability to live, and even open its mouth in the lava, but using Unit-02's coolant and Unit-01's prog knife, Asuka destroyed it.
According to mythology, Sandalphon was the angel of embryos - shown by the fact that Sandalphon was originally found in an embryo form.
