Little is know of Rei until the year 2010, when she was 9 years old. Gendou Ikari had introduced her to Dr. Naoku Akagi, Ritsuko's mother, as well as a young Ritsuko. No one knew anything about her. One night, Rei told Noaku that Gendou, who she was sleeping with, calls her "old hag". This caused Naoku to strangle Rei to death and then she killed herself on top of the MAGI.
She is cloned and the second Rei is the first child selected by the Marduke Report. She is the designated pilot of Eva unit 00. Her past has been erased and very little is actually known about it--only several people, Dr. Ritsuko Akagi and Gendou, actually know about her.
A few days before the beginning of the series Rei was hurt very badly trying to activate her Eva. Gendou came to her aid and burned his hands very badly. She kept the pair of broken glasses that fell that day. She treasures them above anything else. She never gave up and still trusts Gendou Ikari, Shinji's father.
Rei is very quiet and reserved. She doesn't talk unless she is spoken to. She claims that the only reason she pilots Eva unit 00 is because she is bonded to all people. She seems to only do what she is told to do. A prime example of this is when Asuka tells Rei that they are going to be the best of friends. Rei replies, "What for?" Then says she will do it if ordered to do it.
She forms an unbreakable bond with Shinji Ikari and proves it in the end. She sacrices herself to save Shinji's life by self destructing Eva Unit 00.
The third Rei is then created to take her place. Shinji doesn't realize she's a clone, but begins to discover why when Rei begins acting strangely and seems to have lost the bond that they once shared.
