Misato Katsuragi is one of the funniest characters in Neon Genesis Evangelion. She has one of the most intersting and surprising pasts. She and her father were on the antartica team that attempted to capture Adam in an embryo form. While they were there Second Impact occured and Misato's father sacrificed himself to save her life.
She was later found and spent a substancial amount of time in the hospital where she never said a word. She met Ritsuko Akagi and Ryoji Kaji in college and got close to each of them in her own way. She eventually separated from Kaji when she realized he was similar to her father.
Misato joined the third branch of NERV in Germany (2010) to get revenge for what happened to her during secon impact. She and Ritsuko became very important figures in NERV. Their friendship remained in place, but it was often strained during stressful times.
Misato is first introduced to us as a flirtacious young woman who seems to have no shame (remember the picture she slipped into the letter addressed to Shinji?). We realize, however, that Misato is very competant at what she does. Without her NERV would not have been the powerhouse military administration that it was.
She has a bond with Shinji Ikari from the start, which is most likely due to their similar personalities. She refused to let him live alone, which began a humorous disfunctional family consisting of Misato, her warm water penguin Pen-Pen, Shinji, and later on Asuka Langley Soryu.
When Asuka is sent to Japan she is reunited with her old boyfriend Kaji. They trade their sexual comments back and forth, but Misato refused to admit that she still had feeling for Kaji. They later establish another relationship and he helps Misato learn the dark secrets that NERV has been keeping from her. In the end he paid the ultimate price for his information and Misato once again felt abandoned by someone she truely cared for.
