Just like Rei Ayanami little is known of Kaworu Nagisa's history. The only thing that could be discovered was his birthday. He was born on the day that Second Impact occured. He was discovered by SEELE and sent to NERV to speed up the Human Instrumentality Project.
Kaworu was first introduced as Shinji stood by a body of water created in one of the angel battles. Kaworu was singing "Ode to Joy" and commented on singing being one of the best parts of the "Lillium" culture. He and Shinji Ikari began their unusual bond, which would be Kaworu's undoing.
At the sync tests, NERV personel realized that he had the ability to make his sync ratio whatever he wanted it to be. He had the highest sync ratio even when Eva Unit 02's core had not been deleted!
Shinji and Kaworu continue their friendship in an almost homosexual tone in the shower. Kaworu seemed to have no idea of tact and was very happy to enlighten Shinji on his views of Shinji's fragile personality. Shinji eventually tells Kaworu everything about his father, causing their friendship to become the deepest he has ever had.
Kaworu gives up his life, because he is the seventeenth angel, so that Shinji could continue to live. Shinji was forced to destroy his best friend to save his own life as well as the whole world.
"I think I was put on this earth just to meet you, Shinji Ikari. Thank you, my life has been meaningful."
